RTBN 25 Days of Christmas: Day 12
M*A*S*H* "Death Takes A Holiday"
RTBN 25 Days of Christmas is the RTBN staff's irreverent exploration of our collective holiday pop culture traditions.

If the holidays are about family, then my love of M*A*S*H*'s "Death Takes A Holiday" makes a whole lotta sense. I used to watch the shows are obscenely early hours with my dad, and I became pretty attached to Hawkeye and Hot Lips and Hunnicut.

Mash Christmas

From the opening scene chock full of Christmas puns to the end credits, "Death Takes A Holiday" is a classic. The hospital camps is playing host to children from a nearby foster home, and when the supply caravan is headed off by rebels, the various military members turn over the contents of their holiday care packages to give the young refugees a holiday worth having. It's the definition of the Christmas spirit"”even in a war zone, where creature comforts are few and far between, the typically hard hearted, would-be-totally-justified-in-being-jaded military doctors and associates give up their spiced hams and their holiday chocolates in the spirit of service. And Hawkeye's, B.J.'s, and Margaret's fight to keep an injured soldier alive so as not to ruin Christmas for his loved ones is a moving tribute to holiday cheer, even in a place where cheer is in limited supply.

Tomorrow on RTBN 25 Days of Christmas: Rachel throws Christmas cheer to the wind in a discussion of Bad Santa.
