RTBN 25 Days of Christmas: Day 19
Christmas Waltz
RTBN 25 Days of Christmas is the RTBN staff's irreverent exploration of our collective holiday pop culture traditions.

If Christmas is all about nostalgia (I've mentioned that before, right?) then it should be no surprise that the mother of nostalgia shows, Mad Men, does a Christmas episode as good as season five's "Christmas Waltz." Season five was a great season overall, and "Christmas Waltz" does a great job of putting together two favorite characters, who, unfortunately, haven't had all that much interaction over the course of the show: Joan and Don.

The episode does a fantastic job of exploring this dynamic. The two are at incredibly different points in their lives, with Joan's ugly pending divorce and Don's seeming happiness with his young wife. But we've seen Don go through something very similar, and it's moving to watch him be a good friend and a good man by helping Joan through the process. Plus, Paul Kinsey gets tied up in Hare Krishna in a hilarious and yet strangely depressing b-plot that is one of the more unforgettable aspects of the season. "Christmas Waltz" is a great episode of television overall and a fantastic Christmas episode.

Tomorrow, Rachel take on perhaps her earliest memory of Christmas pop culture, The Snowman.
