Day Twenty-Five: Christmas Vacation
For as long as I can remember, it has been a family tradition to watch Christmas Vacation on Christmas Eve. Every year, my family laughs like they have never seen the movie before, and every year, I have to break the news that, yes, Juliette Lewis is in this movie (its always a disappointment). The film follows Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) as he tries to give his family the perfect Christmas. It is easily my favorite in the entire Vacation franchise, and the movie I most closely associate with Christmas.
The movie is basically a 90 minute string of slapstick set pieces, with a phenomenal turn by Randy Quaid as Clark's white trash brother-in-law, but I couldn't ask for anything more. My Christmas season is pretty much summed up by shouts of "Merry Christmas, shitter is full!" and insistence that we will have "the hap-hap-happiest Christmas since Bign Crosby tap danced with Danny fucking Kaye!" And whenever I see a Christmas tree, I make sure to announce that its a "little full...lot of sap." It's a simple, straightforward comedy, with Chevy Chase at his very best. I could write a lot more about why this movie is great, and how much it means to me to sit down every year with my family and laugh our asses off at this silly little spectacle. Or, I could leave you all with this:
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.
