Brief: Seven Psychopaths
Seven Psychopaths
I had desperately wanted to see this when it was in theaters, but for various reasons wasn't able to. As a fan of Martin McDonough (and of his brother), I was excited to see more of his work. At its heights, the movie is a blast--tightly scripted, intelligent, and brilliantly acted (especially by Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken). The movie has a very enjoyable hangdog feel that is rare for the genre, but also leaves it a little bit of a mess. It isn't a cleanly wrought masterpiece by any stretch, but it's a fun, often funny contemplation of the nature of violence in movies and the way it shapes our view of psychology and the world.
